I was sitting at table recently, eating dinner with my new Muslim friend when he asked, “What would you be willing to die for?” At first I wasn’t sure what turn our conversation had taken. “Your ‘question of the day,'” he went on, and then I remembered. Every morning we had been together, I had asked a ‘question of the day. This was the one I had asked this morning. He was curious. He’d obviously been thinking about it. Now he wanted to know my answer. There followed a serious dialogue on meaning and purpose, on what things in life are of highest value, including whether or not one would die for one’s religion. It’s a good question to ponder, don’t you think?

Put it in another context, if you will, that of one’s vocation or calling. What is your level of commitment to where you are right now with regard to your current assignment, or to the people in your life, or the work taking up the most of your time? Do you see yourself as having a clear and passionate commitment to . . . something or someone? And if so, what? A job perhaps, but maybe not the one you wish you had? Or a calling? A serious passionate Kingdom calling? Or a certain someone in your life? Has it been a long time since you felt this strongly about being “committed” to anyone or anything? Think about it. It’s a fair question.

What / who are you willing to die for?
