Years ago, I wrote a simple reminder alongside this verse in my Bible: “How often am I guilty of judging myself.” Not a question. A statement.
“Do not judge, and you will not be judged;
do not condemn, and you will not be condemned;
forgive, and you will be forgiven;
give, and it will be given to you.”
This verse comes from Jesus’ Sermon on the Plain. It emphasizes mercy, forgiveness, and humility in how we treat others—and in how we treat ourselves. Instead of implying weakness, it becomes a platform of faith and strength. As the Apostle Paul later said, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.”
We instinctively know that judging and condemning others is wrong, even as we do it. But showing mercy to ourselves can be even harder. We all have flaws—some hidden, some plainly seen. We are all in need of grace. And when we constantly judge and condemn our own hearts, we begin to view others through the same critical lens. We forget how deeply we ourselves depend on Christ’s forgiveness.
This verse in Luke’s Gospel is not about ignoring sin, but choosing a better way:
Understanding over accusation
Compassion over condemnation
Forgiveness over resentment
Giving—all being given freely,
without reservation
This is the mercy we’ve received.
This is the mercy we’re called to live.
May Jesus keep us close.

Bonus journal note (for those who enjoy a glimpse of real-life spontaneity)
Don’t ever forget: life is full of adventure if you look for it. Today I went on my first-ever motorcycle ride—with my granddaughter Katy, who is an excellent and enthusiastic biker. It was terrific and I loved it! I said I’d like to buy one of these for myself. My daughter said she would block the payment.
(Maybe I’ll just ride with Katy again the next time she visits.)
