When Fear Enters the House

One of the most emotionally difficult scenes to write in Asset Delta was not the violence, the terrorism, or the national crisis.

It was the quiet moment afterward.

The moment when a family no longer feels safe inside its own home.

There is a scene in the novel where exhaustion, fear, grief, and emotional fracture settle silently over a household. No explosions. No headlines. Just people trying to survive the emotional aftermath of what fear has done to them. Conversations are strained. Silence grows heavier. Even love becomes difficult to express.

This scene stayed with me because I have been there. I think many people today understand this feeling more than they admit.

Perhaps not terrorism.
But emotional insecurity.
The quiet anxiety of wondering what will happen next.
Where is God now?

The sense that our world has become unpredictable. Fragile. Unsafe.

And when we stop feeling safe, something changes inside us.

Fear alters how we speak.
How we sleep.
How we trust.
How we pray.

Fear influences decisions. It can even change how we see God.

Scripture repeatedly acknowledges this human struggle. In one of the most honest verses in the Psalms, the writer says: When I am afraid, I put my trust in You. — Psalm 56:3

Notice the verse does not say if I am afraid.

It says when.

Fear itself is not failure. Fear is part of being human. The deeper question is where might fear lead us.

Toward isolation?
Anger?
Control?
Despair?

Or, does it move us toward dependence on something—Someone—greater than ourselves?

One of the hidden themes of Asset Delta is that external crises often reveal the deeper battles already unfolding within us. The greatest danger is not always the threat around us, but what fear quietly develops inside us if it is left unchallenged.

If we are honest, many of us today are emotionally tired. Tired of uncertainty. Tired of division. Tired of waking each morning to another reason to feel anxious.

And yet, in the middle of our fear, and the exhaustion it brings, the Scripture offers a steady invitation: God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.— Psalm 46:1 (NIV)

Not after trouble.
In it.

Fear has a way of revealing what is already happening inside us. Sometimes it exposes pride. Sometimes exhaustion. Sometimes, how desperately we want control over things we cannot control at all.

Peter understood that kind of breaking. The man who once swore he would never fail Christ eventually learned how fragile human strength can be. Years later, he wrote:  Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. — 1 Peter 5:7 NIV

I think those words mean more to people who have actually lived through fear.

Perhaps that is why one of the most emotionally difficult scenes to write in Asset Delta was not the violence, the terrorism, or the national crisis.

It was the quiet moment afterward.

The moment we realized how vulnerable we truly are.
And how deeply we need God in our lives.

May Jesus keep us close.
