Yes —not because God has changed, but because I have.

In earlier seasons of my life, listening to God often felt active, even urgent. I listened for guidance.

What should I do next?
Which door should I walk through?
How do I fix this, build that, become something more?

God’s voice then often came as instruction, correction, or calling — sometimes clear, sometimes wrestled out through prayer, effort, and perseverance.

I have an imaginary place in my mind that I go to when I need more than ordinary conversation with my Father.

I wait there until he comes.

When he asks why I have come, I explain.

And in this season, listening feels quieter — and deeper.

It is less about doing and more about being. God’s voice is not usually rushing me forward but settling me inward. I hear him more in stillness than in striving, more in remembrance than in ambition.

There is a gentleness to it now — a sense of companionship rather than command.

Where once I asked, Lord, what do you want me to do?
Now I ask, Lord, what are you showing me about who you are — and who I am in you?

Perhaps that is one of the quiet gifts of aging faith: we spend less time trying to prove ourselves useful to God and more time learning how deeply we are loved by him.

Listening now often sounds like:

  • reassurance rather than direction
  • a memory illuminated with new meaning
  • a quiet nudge to trust, release, or bless
  • a simple “I am with you” instead of a detailed plan

There is also a widening of perspective. I listen not only for my own path, but for the thread of God’s faithfulness woven through my entire lifetime — how often he was present even when I did not recognize his voice at the time.

And listening now carries less fear of missing God. I trust his nearness more.

I don’t strain as hard to “get it right.” I have learned that God speaks patiently, and that silence itself can be where I find his Presence waiting.

Perhaps this is why wisdom often arrives long after certainty has left the room.

So yes, this season listens differently.

It listens with gratitude.
With surrender.
With a longer memory and a quieter heart.

I think this may be the beginning of wisdom.
