Wednesdays With Ward is about understanding the relative importance of things as seen from a certain viewpoint. My viewpoint comes from over eight decades of living and more than sixty years of active ministry.
Through these years, I’ve challenged myself and thousands of others to seek honest answers to three great questions:
- who is God in my life right now?
- who am I in this powerful new season of my life?
- what shall I do with the years that remain?
A fresh perspective as a Christian in Life’s Third Age.
A Stranger at the Blue Mosque
My World Grew Larger. Jesus Didn’t Grow Smaller. Some years ago, while researching my novel, The Kilçılar Letters, I decided to visit Turkey. I wanted to understand its people, customs, and the ways Islam shaped their lives—especially the experience of women in a predominantly Muslim culture. Dixie found a connection [...]

Before We Answer
Before We Answer This morning I asked my daughter a question. My son lives 3,000 miles away, but I suspect his answer would have been much the same. “Am I more of a question asker or an answer giver?” She thought about it, but it didn’t take long. “I think [...]
The Power of Story
Every once in a while someone tells me, “I don’t read fiction.” I understand. Not everyone enjoys the same kind of reading. But I confess that the words still make me a little sad. Not because everyone ought to read novels. But because story is about much more than filling [...]
The Writer, the Pencil, and the Machine
I’m old enough to remember pens and ink wells, No. 2 pencils, mimeograph machines, flannel boards, the thrill of a Remington typewriter, and eventually those big box-like computers that began appearing on our desks. Today, my recurring challenge is simply keeping my laptop, iPad, smartphone, and smartwatch connected and behaving [...]
Before I Learned to Stop
When I was a boy growing up on our farm in the 1940s, my prized possession was a secondhand bicycle. It wasn’t much to look at. The red paint had dulled and chipped, the seat had seen better days, and it had probably belonged to several boys before it found [...]
The Decision Before Every Other Decision
“What comes into our minds when we think about God is the most important thing about us.” — A. W. Tozer There are certain sentences that stay with you for a lifetime. This is one of them. I’ve been thinking about it again lately. After nearly ninety years of living, [...]
The Older I Get, the More Quietly God Speaks
Yes —not because God has changed, but because I have. In earlier seasons of my life, listening to God often felt active, even urgent. I listened for guidance. What should I do next? Which door should I walk through? How do I fix this, build that, become something more? God’s [...]
